The Ethics Center is hosting a Responsible Conduct of Research Education Committee (RCREC) Workshop. The event is being co-sponsored by the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE).

Objectives
• Introduce participants to the rationale, goals and content for a research ethics curriculum.
• Provide participants with tools and resources to incorporate the teaching of research ethics in the curriculum for research trainees.
• Provide participants with tools and resources to introduce the teaching of research ethics in the mentoring of research trainees.

Audience and Approach
The audience for this program is intended to be diverse, spanning the full range of academic faculty. This workshop recognizes that many research ethics issues are relevant to the practice of a wide range of scholarly and creative activities in the hard sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. To ensure the value of this program to a diverse audience, each of the planned sessions will include some lecture, but also a workshop format designed to result in concrete, discipline-specific strategies and plans.

Presented by:
Dr. Michael Kalichman, Director, Research Ethics Program,, UC San Diego. Directs a project to provide Web-based resources or teaching research ethics (http://research-ethics.net).

Dr. Francis Macrina, Vice President for Research, Virginia Commonwealth University. The author of one of the most widely used texts (Scientific Integrity, ASM Press) for teaching in this area.

Drs. Michael Kalichman and Francis Macrina have both frequently taught Research Ethics workshops throughout the country and are often consulted by local, state, national, and international organizations on the topic of research ethics. In addition, they are both NIH-funded researchers who have been studying various dimensions of research ethics and co-directors of the Responsible Conduct of Research Education Committee of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.
